Quality 100% Cotton

Upcoming Jay Dee project

The typical buzz-building Stone Throw blurb: Jay Dee / J Dilla - "Donuts" CD/LP in early 2006

And a few have asked, “What's up with the title?” Easy explanation. Dilla likes donuts.

Skinny Neck, Future Soul

October 21 Benji B episode starts off right with a new Pharaohe white produced by Jay Dee and a new Slum Villa (Elzhi so underrated). The rest of the show looks heavyweight too: Universal Magnetic and a new(?) Shawn J, Stevie, Gil Scott, Donny Hath, more more and a new Daz at the end. . .

Wasn't "hick hop" supposed to become a genre?

Another curiousity:
The infamous 'lost' Beasties album, recorded during the "Hello Nasty" sessions when Mike D supposedly suffered a brief bout of schizophrenia, waking up believing himself to be a burned-out country and western legend. Ad-Rock, MCA and Mixmaster Mike played safe and went along with him, making the full length LP in the process. Country Mike

. . .

The reworking of the Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight" as country knees-up "Country Delight" (MP3 clip) is a particular highlight.

Beasties today are not what they once were, but in the 90s their attention to detail (Sabotage video including Comedy Central "interview", old men playing basketball, this) was so tight.

Dre / Bacharach

The Dr. Dre / Bacharach collabo that we've been hearing beats and pieces about for ages is finally dropping: At This Time out November 1. Sounds more like a CD-R trade than a proper meeting of the musical minds. No final word til I hear it but sounds disappointing right now. . .

You might also wonder how a seasoned bandleader like Bacharach, who has worked with countless skilled drummers, could ever warm to what a studio musician might call a customized click-track. Because whatever mash-up culture may have made it normal for us to hear, a musician of Bacharach's tastes and generation (he turned 77 in May) couldn't be expected to slam his own music against a hard surface of bass thumps and beats.

"I took [the loops] home and found the ones that inspired me," he said, explaining how the warming process took place. "The songs [that are based on the loops] wouldn't have been written without them. . . .

New Kardi tunes

In case you didn't see him on free newspaper covers across Canadia, Kardi has a new joint coming soon. A couple previews linked to from here. Dude is SO FOCUSED with the mixtape-type covers. I just wish he could get one classic, original beat on a single, something to propel him to A-list status. Like everyone always says, man should be much much bigger.

Top Choice Selection

Really feeling Switch and Solid Groove productions at the moment, two names with major David Taylor involvement. Beyond the Almighty Father and Flookin' Remixes, there's a lot of newness out. He does house stuff that's not really my thing but some of these new breakbeat tunes are what's right now.

Switch - A Bit Patchy (lo-fi MP3 clip)

P.S. Man is also behind the almighty Loose Tips and the other Floorplay bootlegs

Holy Frig

The best mash-up types around drop CD #2: It's the Motherfucking Remix 2. Clips there.

Ringtones are 10% of the music market?

That status lasts only until the man on the corner starts selling the sampler chip for $5.

Wood grain

Found via (recently deceased and re-born) Hollerboard

The Illegible DJ Caps & Pandemonium Jones Live @ Applebee's

Big up up all who were in attendance for Diso Oct, you made it one of the best ever. Special double shouts to C'n'J'n'L-R for ripping it and spreading love and Alanna Stuart for exploding the dance.

Mixed bag

A few worth a listen:

- Kano "Reload It" (High Contrast remix) realaudio stream

- Pharcyde "Drop" (Beatminerz remix) realaudio stream

- Blackalicious "My Pen and Pad" (off new LP The Craft) realaudio stream Don't know why Chief Xcel isn't a name people watch for like Pete Rock, Jay Dee and the rest of the A team, he's got a signature sound that's so all over the map you could just call it "raw but deep sounds"

- Ghostface Killah (prod. Pete Rock) "Be Easy" link to download on page A loving life-type club tune like only Ghostface can make. Disorganised responds to hip hop again, this is in the bag for November. . .

New Seiji. . .

remix that builds on the rock angle of the Freeform Five remix with some appreciation for grimier sounds. Nothing groundbreaking but this will KILL the dance. lo-fi MP3

My love for this dude continues, he is the DJ Timmy Tim of the 130bpm world.
