Putting Jin's retirement in perspective

I don't usually post up funny stuff up in here, but I have to post Sasha Frere-Jones' take on Jin's retirement:

Jin is retiring, which is weird enough that we like it. So while you're making your Best of Jin CDR, and getting nostalgic for, like, three months ago, don't forget to include "Jin The MC Freestyle," his take on Nas's "Bridging The Gap," from E.Nyce's Nothing But Freestyles. Jin's Dad rhymes on it, and his life is more interesting than Olu Dara's, at least for the length of this song: "I was born in China, moved to the USA, opened up a restaurant. I worked there every day. Then I had a son, Jin in his name. Now he's an MC, one of the best in the game."

Timbo knucks and is BUCK

Tim has always been on some future FUTURE. It figures that his bodybuilding goals extend just as far out as those hyper-syncopated Fela to country beats he pumps out. The Phil Spector of the 90s/00s? Come to think of it, we may come to look back on Tim Mosley as a much greater figure than Spector. .

But there is one goal Timbaland has not yet achieved. He wants to be buck.

Since this past November, Timbaland has embarked on an extensive weight-loss program that has helped him drop dramatically from a bloated 331 pounds to, as of this writing, a husky 222 pounds. Concurrently he is incorporating a protein-rich diet into a training regimen geared to turn body fat into thick, protruding muscles.

"I don't want to be lean and cut. I want to be buck," says Timbaland during an otherwise quiet evening at his mansion. "I just like that look. When you see horses, or animals, like you see a monkey or a gorilla, like, they cut.

"It's a freaky look. When you keep working out, you get to be almost like an animal," he continues. "I like the veins popping out. I love all that."

Bun B comments on Dizzee Rascal collabo

SOHH: One of the illest collabos you did was with the UK emcee Dizzee Rascal. How did that happen?

Bun B: A friend of mine, Matt Sonzala, turned me onto him. I heard a couple of his tracks and it was a different sound, but he's a real emcee and I liked his flow. No matter what different styles the music has, if you're real about emceeing you will always recognize flow. Just like he's in London with the cockney slang and then he's Jamaican as well, but at the same time he was listening to my sh!t and he could feel the vibe. He could understand flow. So when we met we had a mutual respect for each other. We stayed in contact with phone calls and e-mails to make sure that we got together and got a track recorded without leaving it up to the record company or the management.

Full interview here.

Also so major is the clip of Dizzee live on Houston radio (Houston SO REAL) just ripping the shit out of Still Tippin and other bounce beats. Makes the connect between bounce and the halfstep grime stuff so direct. I mean, Dizzee stepped his game up since that last album, he's there as an emcee on his word merit. More trans-Atlantic collabos please! MP3 (19.4mb)
