Another Visioneers cover

New seven-inch from the Mark Mac (4hero), Somatik and Hopper collabo. This one's a cover of the Pharcyde's "Runnin'". All replayed live and lush! They did this before with Nas's The World Is Yours, it's not just a gimmick. The flip sounds nice too, hopefully these don't all disappear before they cross the pond. snippets: Runnin' b/w Rollin' for the Ride (low-fi MP3s)

"As I Pawwwwwwwwwp Shawwwwwwwwwts"

The Dirty Preme collabo in full: MP3. Spine is runnin'.

Mind Playing Tricks On Me

I'm not usually into Internet shorts, but heard about this one on the Hollertronix message board and had to check. Very nicely put together: it's all in the details. . . I present the Geto Boys "Mind Playing Tricks On Me" featuring Star Wars action figures. . .

They Ain't Ready. . .

A good piece on M.i.a from a Cali alt newsweekly. The album is called Arular and drops February 2005.

"That God Damn Credit, Dead It"

I wrote a piece in this month's Pound magazine about the fiendish ways of credit card co's. The Pho Rilla perspective on things but a little more in-depth, you know. . .

I'm looking to expand distribution and write more about music, culture and politics, so hit me at sopa@phorilla.com if you're looking.

ODB meets Preme snippet

6 seconds of empee to whet the appetite.

Basically

This is Tip's "Common ditches Erica Wright and goes back to that Tim boot shit with 'Food'" move. I mean the Dilla beat? The Black Sheep interpolation? I mean the filter bridge? The hunger back in that voice? This is it.

December chart: top 3 spaces are full

Three unreleased demos from the D'angelo Voodoo sessions have made their way onto the web. A little slice called Pete Rock, a cover of Funky Drummer and a heavy heavy tune called Joe Texan. This is major right here: D'angelo Voodoo is one of the all-time greats. Coming across this is like finding out A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing was secretly a double album! The link

Cameraman speaks

It turns out that the cameraman who filmed the U.S. Marine shooting the unarmed, injured prisoner is an active blogger. Here's his very honest and human post about what went down that day.

Kurt Cobain produces Boston Mash-up

Malcolm Gladwell (author of Roots inspiration information The Tipping Point) has a nice little piece in the New Yorker about plagiarism in the arts. As always from Gladwell, a nice survey of different perspectives on the issue. Between the recent sampling court decision and Lawrence Lessig's Creative Commons movement, fair use and intellectual property issues are going to be major in the next years.

Here's an MP3 of the close-one-eye-or-the-other similarity between Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and Boston's "More Than A Feeling". . .

Parental Guidance: Explicit Defness

Mom's been doing the knowledge on hearing loss, so I'm looking at a pair of these. Not cheap, but it would be nice to still be able to enjoy music in 20 years.

Tune!

O-dub has put up Eddie Kendricks' "Girl You Need A Change of Mind", interesting not only for its fat breakdown and build-up, but also its seminal role in the origins of what we do today.

I just finished reading Last Night a DJ Saved My Life and Love Saves the Day: A History of American Dance Music Culture, 1970-1979. The first chronicles the history of DJ culture from Northern Soul to early hip hop to the present day, while the second focuses specifically on the development of disco culture in NYC. Discos existed long before disco the genre, and the tunes of the early days sound a lot better to these ears.

"Girl You Need a Change of Mind" was the sort of mid-tempo, percussive groover that had people banging on the walls long before they needed 137bpm and an overwhelming b-line to pull them onto the floor. Reading about how that tune tore up the place reveals a lot about how things have evolved. Download the MP3 and save it until you've read the book.

Mos Def "Black Rock" vid

Here it is, in hi speed Realplayer. I like the new Mos album, it's way better than the lukewarm Kweli. I just wish Minnesota had come with rougher bass and tougher drums on this one, it could have been a real club banger. . . still nice. And who's still the style king?

New Dilla

Been loving Elzhi ever since I heard him on the Jay Dee BBE album: the flow, the flow! Here's some new tunes over Dilla & Waajeed street beats.

Two classics, remixed

And not some import remixes by 17-year-old north european teens that they did in 2003 either. O-dub features a couple joints I've never heard: Biggie Smalls' Party & Bullshit (Lord Finesse remix) and Nas's Represent (Original mix, not the LP). Both essential.

Jigga on Conan

Jay as a guest (not musical performer). Funny. Jay's a great emcee, but his real gift is for appealing to the masses and getting his message across in a low-key way. It will be interesting to see what he's up to in ten years time.

Hi-speed in Real & Windows Media.

Been out and about. . .

Between Calgary, Toronto, and Diso here in town the last few weeks, shit's been crazy. Here are a few pix from my travels:

Disorganised last night. Best one yet - two floors of people wylin' out to every genre of music under the sun. Diso NYE is gonna be some party. . .

Calgary two weeks ago - for real

Recordland is the place to hit in Calgary. . .

. . . and that's the reason why!

Up at Banff the next day
