Two Videos

The new Jigga video keeps it simple, black-and-white and early 90s throwback. The links are at the bottom of this page.

Number two is even better. Kanye, Mos Def, and Freeway in Two Words is a tribute to the credits of all those terrific 70s flicks. It's a 55mb Quicktime movie.

Rocafella is new label for chin-stroking artsy berets. Thanks to Lino for links and insight on both of these.

Jam across the river today

If you're in Ottawa, and I know a lot of you are, take advantage of the true spring we're getting today and check this b-boy thing over in Gatineau this afternoon - the Freshest Steps 2004. Starts soon, leave now! Sorry, I just got the word last-minute. . .

4hero special on Benji B

Haven't had a chance to listen yet myself, but wanted to send a heads-up to all 'cause these shows only stay up for a week. Benji B has done an episode devoted to Mark 4hero to celebrate the release of he and his partner's remix album. Can't wait to hear the Scarface remix, I've been feenin' to set my ears on that one for a while.

Submay maps at comparable scale

I've always been interested in public transit like my name was Moonstarr, so I found this cool. It's maps of the great subways of the world, presented side-by-side and to scale. So you see how much larger the London system is, despite the fact that the Paris metro has more stations. You see how spread out the city of LA is. And so on. . .

thanks to Bimal for the link (and great set last night man!)

Last kanye-related post for a while. . .

Off the Kanye Unreleased Joints series of twelves (5 or 6 volumes deep), Kon rhymes over the classic beat he did for Little Kim - about who gets beats for "half price" (realaudio) and why ;-). Mixtape culture is great, we get two dozen versions of just about everything and some of it's bound to be good. "I don't like fake boobies, but I'd do it to Little Kim". . . fun stuff. . .

On CKCU Saturday night. . .

A heads-up that I'll be handling hosting duties in Trevor Walker's old timeslot (8-10pm) tomorrow. Starting in June, Cham and myself are going to be hosting a show on CKCU 93.1FM (Ottawa), 8-10pm the first Saturday of each month. CKCU goes out live over the web and we'll prolly archive the shows at uprisingfam.com too. More details (like a name) in the weeks to come. . .

Heard that before!

Don't know who's behind this, but I came across the link on Okayplayer: a treasure trove of original samples.
I haven't heard half the Kanye originals before - this guy puts in work! Those who don't listen to oldies black radio all the time will flip out when you hear the Lenny Williams (I think) slow jam "A House Is Not a Home". . .

Jean Grae / 9th Wonder

What What from Natural Resource and those hot appearances on the second Herbaliser album is bizzack. She's been honing her skills on a heap of projects in the meantime, but this is the one that perked up my ears. I'll be honest with you, most female emcees in rap seem like projects of their manager or diluted neo-soul gyals. What What can run with the big boys. The pauses, the one-liners, and most of all the subject matter she covers - all beautiful. Tune is: Don't Rush Me (realaudio) feat. 9th on the beat computer.

Final Chappelle episode of the season

Dave saves one of the best lines of the season for the final episode - just watch the Wayne Brady show. :-) As always, you need high-speed and Realplayer.

Thanks for a great season

Thanks to Jose3030 for making the streams available all season long. Don't mess: pick up the DVD when it comes out.

Synchro in T.O.

Had a great time on Friday spinning alongside Denise Benson & Andrew Allsgood at Andy Poolhall. They do a weekly there 3 weeks out the month. I've been down a couple times now and it's been a heavy house party each time - recommended. Details here.

The Purple Album

Cham will love (or perhaps hate) this - someone's taken the Black album acapellas and put them over beats made of Prince Rogers Nelson - it really is called the Purple album. There are a few nice bits for something that was clearly conceived as a gimmick. . .

That good 80s shit

Well worth a listen is Greg Wilson's Best of '83 Mix, a 40-minute blaze throw 4 dozen or so of the tightest "black music" cuts out the UK club scene. That means proto-hip hop, naked disco, and electro. Doing the Disorganised monthly with the boys hasn't converted me to the slicker sounds 100%, but I have to admit I'm feeling some of the funkier selection of the early 80s these days. Apparently this mix was a major influence on early UK deejay culture too. For more info follow the link. . .

For '83 (!), the mixing is, in my opinion, simply incredible!

Chappelle Show Greatest Misses

Another Chappelle classic. Dave shows sketches that they filmed that didn't really work out. Not only are the sketches themselves pretty damn funny, but Dave sitting on stage adding commentary just brings it to that next level.

Hi-speed Realvideo stream

Nelson Mandela as the boot camp sergeant is just wrrrrong! Hitler getting playa-hated on is just plain funny. . .

Grunwald is gone

He's out. Here's hoping the guy they bring in to replace him is more of an insider, the kind of guy who can perform the magic Jerry West has done in Memphis. I think the time to blow up T.O. and trade Vince will come, whether it's a couple years down the line or sooner.
